Katrin Valgemäe’s subtly grotesque pin-up product series enriches classical painting techniques with elements of popular art, kitsch, and camp spirit, drawing inspiration from the media’s exaggerated self-centeredness and revealing multiple layers of fascinating stories upon closer inspection.
The idea for this painting came from the artist’s own life. “It is an allegorical self-portrait. The kitchen is the heart of my home. It is the place where I spend most of my time. Whether caring for my small child, cooking, or doing other chores, everything happens in the kitchen. I also paint in the kitchen. Additionally, it contains references to Richard Hamilton’s influence, his (1956) collage ‘Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?’ I tried to capture a satire of my own ‘well’ organized everyday life, a parodic stretch of the overwhelming illusion – always trying to be everything to everyone and not any less.”
